Murano, Burano, and on board Le Lyrial

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Today was a very busy day! After checking out of our hotel, we took a boat to the island of Murano, about a 20 minute ride from Venice. The island is known for its glass making and we began with an excellent demonstration of the art of glass making as we observed a master in glass blowing. Later we toured the showroom filled with magnificent glass pieces. Unfortunately, they were way to expensive. However, in their less expensive store I was able to purchase a small dish and two bracelets. I just couldn't go away empty handed! We then walked around the city and took in the sights. The main street is filled with shops and restaurants.

From Murano we boated to nearby Burano for lunch and sight-seeing. Burano is an entirely different type of island. It is a fishing village but is also known for its exquisite lace. The wives of the island used to embroider while waiting for their husbands to come home from sea. Embroidering is still done on the island and is very expensive! The island is also a photographer's paradise because of all the colorful houses, each a different color or shade. In fact, if someone wants to change the color of his house, he has to submit a request to a local committee for approval!

When we left Burano, we headed for our ship, Le Lyrial, which would be our home for the next 6 days. We boarded at 4:00 and after we were shown our room, everyone met in the theater for a welcome from the captain followed by a mandatory life boat drill. We were invited up to the observation deck  at 6:30 for wine and cheese and one last look at Venice as we sailed to Croatia.
